There are a few Hostas now with names that represent food related subjects. The majority of these have been named by a lovely chap called Bob Solberg.
Bob has introduced over 100 Hostas, with a lot of them named after food and drink but in particular Mexican food. Hosta Guacamole is one of those. Others include Hosta Enchilladas, Hosta Tortilla Chip, Hosta Frozen Margarita & Hosta Fried Green Tomatoes. He obviously likes mexican food!
Before we talk about Hosta Guacamole I think we should find out a bit more about Bob.
Bob Solberg graduated with B.S. in Biology from Davidson College, Davidson, NC in 1973. He worked in Botany at UNC in Chapel Hill, NC specializing in Bryophyte Ecology, 1973-1975. The Green Hill Farm, Inc. was established as a Hosta nursery in 1981 which has introduced new Hostas for 39 years. Bob is the founder and head of the Carolina Hosta Society 1986-1991, President 1992-1996, Chairman of the Board 1998-2002
He is the co-founder of American Hosta Growers Group 1988 which became American Hosta Growers Association in 1998, a trade organization of Hosta nurseries, which established the Hosta of the Year Program beginning in 1996. He edits The Hosta Journal, the principal publication of the American Hosta Society, 1988-1990, and serves as the vice president for The Genus Hosta of The American Hosta Society, 1998-2001.
One might say, he is the man for all things Hosta.
So! What about Hosta Guacamole?
Guacamole is a sport of Hosta Fragrant Bouquet and carries the same fragrant flower. It is a large Hosta with striking variegated leaves that are Avocado green in the centre and darker green margins. The foliage is heart-shaped, slightly convex, with a thin glaucous underside, and forms a dense overlapping mound. A typical mature specimen can reach 60-80cm in height with spread of up to 150cm.
The funnel-shaped white flowers form mid to late summer and are very fragrant, sitting on scapes of up to 90Cm tall.
The foliage only improves with age. The thick leaves make this less likely to slug attack but it isn’t registered as slug resistant. It performs better in light shade but will tolerate more.
We use this variety in the garden as a large feature plant In the borders, and but also looks great in a container.
This variety has received multiple accolades, including the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit. and the American Hosta Growers 2002 Hosta of the Year
