Hosta Plant Sales, Specialist Online Hosta Nursery In The UK 

Hostas are constantly changing, colours, deepening shades or fading tones. Many people worry that the colour on their Hosta differ from the issued photos and worry that it’s not what they thought it was. Fear not:-

A Hosta sport is a naturally occurring, usually sudden, mutation, on a single shoot, that creates a new & unique leaf pattern or colour. A Hosta reversion happens when a mutated part of the Hosta mutates again and goes back to look like its original parent.

The need to identify our Hostas has become increasingly important as the garden grows in popularity; this summer, we expect around 30,000 visitors to enjoy this beautiful space. In 2024, we subscribed to Hortis, a software programme that will eventually enable us to record the names of all the plants in the garden accurately and share them with visitors.

So on another lovely sunny day Amy negotiated the winding country lanes of North Yorkshire towards Skewsby near York. What a relief to find the sign ‘Rewela Hostas’ near the centre of the village and John waiting by the entrance to welcome us. Even as we turned into the driveway the spectacle of numerous hosta pots wetted our appetites.

How many Hostas have you got? Does it really matter? Who cares anyway? Do you need to have more? Do you have to have that new variety? Can you resist? Have I got too many? How many is too many? Should you stop now? Undecided? So which category do you fit into? Yes, there is more than one! Are you a Hostaholic or do you feel more like a Hostaphile?

We added a simple 16ft x 12ft canopy, made from four jump poles set into the ground with Postcrete and topped with a £40 sail from Amazon. We built raised beds from sleepers, filled them with my homemade compost, topped up with a little bought-in compost, and created a shaded area for my hostas beneath the canopy. I also added trellis to the back of the beds to provide extra shade. The whole area has become such a welcoming and peaceful space.

We are so lucky to live and run our Hosta business from the Heart of Yorkshire. We are based in the small village of Skewsby, just on the edge of the Howardian Hills.

Guacamole is a sport of Hosta Fragrant Bouquet and carries the same fragrant flower. It is a large Hosta with striking variegated leaves that are Avocado green in the centre and darker green margins.

One of the many wonderful attributes of the Hosta is often overlooked or ignored. That is the leaf surface.........In particular, shiny leaved Hostas.

We need to be extra vigilant in a prolonged hot & sunny spell. It’s not just the watering that needs to change; it’s also the pots & containers position that needs consideration. Pots should be moved to a good shaded are, at least for the time being. Less direct sun on the pots, the less evaporation happens. Provide more shade with other larger plants, or an umbrella or shade sail.

January Should be a month of rest for Hosta growers with very little that has to be done. Hostas are dormant and fast asleep. Here’s some things to think about.

The flowers are part of the life cycle of the Hosta and should be enjoyed. Whilst they are not primarily grown for their flowers, their blooms attract certain pollinators. Hostas produce bell-shaped flowers that bloom in summer and provide nectar for both bees & butterflies. Bees are highly attracted to purple & lavender, and the bees can be seen in abundance during the flowering season.

Your Hosta has a natural shape for weed suppression. Consider the mature size of a clump of leafy Hosta planted alongside another, not just a Hosta, but completely covering the soil beneath, preventing weed germination. The weed seedling will always be here but are being denied the essential materials for them to successfully germinate.

The first bit of advice would be to keep your miniatures in containers & not to plant in open ground. At least until they are well established. Miniatures refers to the ultimate size of the Hostas which also means that the root structure is also very small.

Fasciation usually becomes more prevalent when the Spring weather can’t make up its mind what to do. We have had unseasonably cold weather, followed by a prolonged period of extremely warm weather. Followed by heavy overnight frosts. It’s no wonder the Hostas are confused. It is felt that these rapid shifts in temperatures shock the plants biological clock as it tries to emerge.

Plant Passports may sound like a drole subject for a blog, but there is a reason for having them and we feel the need to let you know why we participate. We are more than happy to be a part of legislation that protects the UK’s plant population.

So often there is an issue when choosing which Hosta to go with another Hosta or plant based on its leaf colour, or even texture contrast. Will they go together? Will they look good? Can you get it wrong? What about the other plants that aren’t Hostas. Will they go?
