We showcase our customers gardens, regularly in our monthly newsletter and have a dedicated page on our website  which is very popular. We feel that they need even more exposure, hence featuring just a few in this Blog so even more people will see the effort they have made and be inspired with a few ideas they can use in their own gardens. Now is a great time to plan ahead for next year.

During the design and construction of our garden we had to carefully think about the type of trees we used to provide shade and shelter for the garden bearing in mind that we were to grow a lot of Hostas.

This is an exciting time for us at Rewela Hostas. It’s when we sit down and discuss and decide which varieties we would like add to our collection for the new season.

We are constantly amazed at the number of people that declare their love for Hostas, some freely admit being a Hostaholic. There must be something about them that leaves so many people with a need to buy, to own, to love such a humble leafy perennial

So, whilst your Hostas are in their dormant state what can you use to extend the interest in your garden, when your Hostas are not giving us their usual grandeur. What about this then? Fill your area with a multitude of colourful Spring bulbs.

As we get towards the end of the season, you will notice that a lot of your Hosta foliage is starting to change colour, often showing autumnal tones. Why do they do this?

We use nematode control for both Vine Weevil and slugs & snails. As nematodes are not available in garden centres, and need to be bought on-line, they are not generally that well known. Let’s put that to rest now!

The American Hosta Society started listing varieties being registered. Started in 1969 with just 3 x varieties. In 1970 one of the first being registered was Hosta Green Lava. This variety is still available today.

Splitting or dividing Hosta is a great way to maintain the shape of your plants, extend their lives, create new plants for other parts of the garden, and to improve the look and vitality of the existing crown. Splitting is easy, once you know what to do.

The plain coloured reversion is usually a stronger growing part than the variegated bit and if left alone will eventually take over the whole plant. If caught early enough, it is often just a leaf or two. All that is needed in this situation is to take out these leaves by removing them from the base taking out the whole section including the crown and roots. This may need to be repeated in certain cases.

All three factors need to be optimum to achieve maximum size. Anything less than this the giant Hosta may not reach its full potential.

However, what about those thousands of Hostaholics, who are worried about their Hostas during this weather and what they should and shouldn’t do!

Then we saw some bonsai trays advertised and thought these would be just perfect for our miniatures. Miniatures Hostas do not need a great big space to grow, indeed the opposite, so planting them in these bonsai dishes seemed to be perfect.

There are thousands of varieties on the market and inevitably, some look very similar to others. There are definite advantages to this, one of which is if you can’t get the one you desire, there is usually an alternative that looks similar.
