There are many Hosta awards available but why are they important and how relevant are they to Hosta lovers in the Uk?

However, what is underneath makes the difference in whether you get a good one or not. The root structure is probably the most important element of the Hosta. It’s probably not the most glamorous subject to talk about, but I feel there are Hostas growers that will find this interesting.

You may not be able to do anything when everything is frozen solid, but there will be times when you can get outside, even though you don’t fancy it, and do a little winter maintenance. Take the opportunity while you can. Getting outside is good for you, and better than sitting with your feet up, watching television all day long. Get out there, even if it’s only for a short while. Wrap yourself up well, and get to it.

Now is a great time to plan ahead for a great Hosta display this year. Whilst the weather conditions reduce the amount of time you may spend in your garden, why don’t you make use of your ‘indoor’ time and make some plans for the rest of the year. No matter the size of your plot, it will always benefit from a bit of winter organisation.

Winter is a period of the year where everything looks as it should be, and you would be forgiven in thinking there are no wee beasties to worry about! Admittedly, slugs & snails won’t have any effect on your Hosta foliage, nibbling away and making ugly holes everywhere, because there is no foliage. Your Hostas are dormant. They have already lost their foliage. If there are any remnants of dying foliage left, remove them. General Tidiness Slugs will find a home almost everywhe

Here are a few ideas of what you might like to buy for a Hosta loving friend or relative, with a Hosta theme. These are a few ideas that are bit different and may be perfect for that small gift for that Hostaholic friend.

One of those jobs is to take a little more care for all Hostas overwintered in their pots & containers. Each & every pot is inspected for a variety of reasons. Some may need to be moved on into a bigger container; some will be happy where they are.

Leaf mould is simply a process of collecting and storing that years leaves and waiting for 2 yrs or so to get the correct decomposition, turning the pile occasionally. Once decomposed, about 2 yrs, the leaf mould itself does not have much nutrient value but is a valuable source of natural organic material for your garden.

During the design and construction of our garden we had to carefully think about the type of trees we used to provide shade and shelter for the garden bearing in mind that we were to grow a lot of Hostas.

We are constantly amazed at the number of people that declare their love for Hostas, some freely admit being a Hostaholic. There must be something about them that leaves so many people with a need to buy, to own, to love such a humble leafy perennial

So, whilst your Hostas are in their dormant state what can you use to extend the interest in your garden, when your Hostas are not giving us their usual grandeur. What about this then? Fill your area with a multitude of colourful Spring bulbs.

As we get towards the end of the season, you will notice that a lot of your Hosta foliage is starting to change colour, often showing autumnal tones. Why do they do this?

We use nematode control for both Vine Weevil and slugs & snails. As nematodes are not available in garden centres, and need to be bought on-line, they are not generally that well known. Let’s put that to rest now!

The American Hosta Society started listing varieties being registered. Started in 1969 with just 3 x varieties. In 1970 one of the first being registered was Hosta Green Lava. This variety is still available today.

Splitting or dividing Hosta is a great way to maintain the shape of your plants, extend their lives, create new plants for other parts of the garden, and to improve the look and vitality of the existing crown. Splitting is easy, once you know what to do.

The plain coloured reversion is usually a stronger growing part than the variegated bit and if left alone will eventually take over the whole plant. If caught early enough, it is often just a leaf or two. All that is needed in this situation is to take out these leaves by removing them from the base taking out the whole section including the crown and roots. This may need to be repeated in certain cases.
