They have decided align their new criteria as quickly as possible the AHS have just announced both 2026 & 2027 winners. Therefore we now know that the AHS Hosta of the Year 2027, has been awarded to Hosta Clear Fork River Valley.

As we covered in last week's blog The American Hosta Society have changed the basis for the ongoing Hosta of the year awards, which means we are aware of Hostas of the Year in advance. One for 2026 & one for 2027. Let’s look at 2026 first and then next week look at 2027.

There are many Hosta awards available but why are they important and how relevant are they to Hosta lovers in the Uk?

However, what is underneath makes the difference in whether you get a good one or not. The root structure is probably the most important element of the Hosta. It’s probably not the most glamorous subject to talk about, but I feel there are Hostas growers that will find this interesting.

You may not be able to do anything when everything is frozen solid, but there will be times when you can get outside, even though you don’t fancy it, and do a little winter maintenance. Take the opportunity while you can. Getting outside is good for you, and better than sitting with your feet up, watching television all day long. Get out there, even if it’s only for a short while. Wrap yourself up well, and get to it.

Now is a great time to plan ahead for a great Hosta display this year. Whilst the weather conditions reduce the amount of time you may spend in your garden, why don’t you make use of your ‘indoor’ time and make some plans for the rest of the year. No matter the size of your plot, it will always benefit from a bit of winter organisation.
