It’s that romantic time of year again with Valentines Day tomorrow, so I thought we would take a closer look at Hosta Love Story. This Hosta will be a part of your garden "love story." Dare I say ‘swoon-worthy’. A Hosta that truly captures the heart!

Due to the cessation of the AHGA Hosta of the year, which has been replaced by the American Hosta Society Hosta of the Year. They have decided align their new criteria as quickly as possible the AHS have just announced both 2026 & 2027 winners. Therefore we now know that the AHS Hosta of the Year 2027, has been awarded to Hosta Clear Fork River Valley.

As we covered in last week's blog The American Hosta Society have changed the basis for the ongoing Hosta of the year awards, which means we are aware of Hostas of the Year in advance. One for 2026 & one for 2027. Let’s look at 2026 first and then next week look at 2027.

There are many Hosta awards available but why are they important and how relevant are they to Hosta lovers in the Uk?

We are constantly amazed at the number of people that declare their love for Hostas, some freely admit being a Hostaholic. There must be something about them that leaves so many people with a need to buy, to own, to love such a humble leafy perennial

The American Hosta Society started listing varieties being registered. Started in 1969 with just 3 x varieties. In 1970 one of the first being registered was Hosta Green Lava. This variety is still available today.

The plain coloured reversion is usually a stronger growing part than the variegated bit and if left alone will eventually take over the whole plant. If caught early enough, it is often just a leaf or two. All that is needed in this situation is to take out these leaves by removing them from the base taking out the whole section including the crown and roots. This may need to be repeated in certain cases.

Then we saw some bonsai trays advertised and thought these would be just perfect for our miniatures. Miniatures Hostas do not need a great big space to grow, indeed the opposite, so planting them in these bonsai dishes seemed to be perfect.
