We are delighted to have a new guest blog from Diane White a passionate Hosta lover.
My gardening journey really began about four years ago when we moved to our current house. Just through the garden gate was an unloved piece of waste ground which has since become my allotment.
It was in full sun for most of the day, with no trees or shrubs, and I had absolutely no idea what I was going to do with it. The first thing I did was create a path down the middle, followed by the idea of dividing it into four sections so I could concentrate on one area at a time.
At around 100ft by 45ft, it’s a fairly large plot, so it felt quite daunting at first. Around half of it is devoted to growing vegetables and salads. Hostas have always been a passion of mine, and I already had a small collection before we moved. Our previous garden had plenty of shade, but this new plot was completely different, so I had to rethink my plans.
Visiting Rewela Hostas gave me the inspiration I needed. John and Daphne have created such a special place. Last year, I decided to devote one quarter of the allotment to ornamental planting, with a seating area where I could relax and enjoy it.
We added a simple 16ft x 12ft canopy, made from four jump poles set into the ground with Postcrete and topped with a £40 sail from Amazon. We built raised beds from sleepers, filled them with my homemade compost, topped up with a little bought-in compost, and created a shaded area for my hostas beneath the canopy. I also added trellis to the back of the beds to provide extra shade. The whole area has become such a welcoming and peaceful space.
My small collection of Hostas has grown to around 120 plants this year—many of them from you, as I simply can’t resist adding a few more whenever I visit Rewela Hostas!
I think my next project will be to build a pergola on the patio in our garden so I can create another shaded space for even more hostas. Whether that happens will depend on what I decide once the new gardening season begins, so for now it’s a case of watch and wait.
