Love is in the Air .... Hosta Love Story

It’s that romantic time of year again with Valentines Day tomorrow, so I thought we would take a closer look at Hosta Love Story. This Hosta will be a part of your garden "love story." Dare I say ‘swoon-worthy’. A Hosta that truly captures the heart!

Hosta Love story was first registered in 2020 by Hans Hansen of Walters Gardens, (Shadowland Collection), Michigan, USA, and is a seedling of a cross between Hosta Niagara Falls Streaked and Hosta Viking Ship.

Hosta Love Story will form a medium Hosta of 30cm – 40cm in height and a spread at maturity of approximately 100cm. This Hosta is a reliable and vigorous grower, establishing quickly and filling in nicely. This is a great benefit for gardeners who want a plant that will quickly establish itself and start looking its best.

It has green foliage with a white medial (centre) variegation. The leaves are ovate in shape, relatively flat, slightly rippled and dull on top. The contrast between the creamy white centre and the deep green border is really striking, and the heart shape adds a touch of classic elegance.

It has long, heart-shaped, rippled leaves, coming to a sharp point, that present themselves to the light to show off their lovely shape and colour. There are yellow and light green streaks that jet between the centre and margin colours. The leaves are ovate in shape, relatively flat, slightly rippled and dull on top. Very much a tricolour leaf much like War Paint. The robust, rippled leaves may very well make this variety slug resistant.

During June and into July, it will send up scapes of up to 50cm-75cm tall holding a mass of almost white blooms, with translucent, interior, stripes, held well above the foliage. It looks fantastic in large numbers in a drift, particularly when in full bloom, creating a Hosta that can be enjoyed for its foliage and flowers.

This is a stunning looking Hosta that will look great near the front of a border, where it can be seen, or better still as a display pot. Hosta 'Love Story' is a charming and popular Hosta known for its beautiful foliage and vibrant colours. It is a great choice for adding a touch of romance and elegance to the shade garden.
