Here is an Hosta inspired idea for parents and grand parents. Why not build your own Fairy Garden together. Share your passion for Hostas with the next generation by using many of the really lovely miniature Hostas with other tiny plants to create a magical place for youngsters to enjoy?

Every year, about this time a magical thing happens in the garden. Well, the kids think it’s magic. That’s all that matters! This post will help you create those magical, no fuss areas of the garden, just for the kids, as well as the big kids.

So! What are we talking about? Imagine wandering around the garden, and all of a sudden, a ‘Fairy Garden’ appears. The kids will love it! Don’t you just love it when the fairies come to visit each summer?

It’s very easy too! Finding a good location isn’t difficult. Generally, it will be around the base of an established, tree that doesn’t get too much direct sunlight. The bigger the tree, the bigger the fairy garden.

Let’s start with choosing which plants you want to use in your fairy garden. Small and colourful are perfect to make the area pop. Try a few annuals like Pansies, Impatiens and even smaller Pelargoniums. Bringing continuous colour to the area and relatively easy maintenance. Most flowering annuals are more than happy in a cool spot as will be small or miniature Hostas.

The most important elements to you fairy garden are the fairies, of course. Well, fairies and gnomes. Yes! I said gnomes. Flowers will brighten up your display, but the gnomes will bring the whimsy. These should be placed in ‘unexpected’ places.

Miniature fairy houses really bring the garden to life. There are so many options available from small ceramic types to hand-made wooden ones.  Why not create a door on the trunk of your tree, giving the appearance of a small person’s home.

How about incorporating some solar lighting. It’s surprising how little light they require to light up the area at dusk. This is an added bonus to the daytime look. Bring it to life in the evening.

Having broken clay pots with small plants & gravel in them is an idea. We all have them. Why not incorporate them in your fairy garden.

Why not get your kids to make their own fairy garden. Let their ideas run riot. You don’t need to spend lots of money. Make use of what you have lying around.

Use broken, unused, terracotta pots of any size, or even old teacups bowls, just remember the drainage hole.

The soil/compost depends on the plants you are using but well drained soil is good. If using cacti or succulents, it may need extra drainage.

Find some small rocks or stones to give a little structure. Flat river rocks look great even some fancy crystals or polished rocks, with a little colour.

Add a small pathway using fine gravel or sand. It will define spaces in the garden. The use of other materials can accentuate and accessorise your fairy garden. You can add items such as shell, marble, sea glass, tile pieces, mini pine cones, acorn, small sticks, twine and bark.

Ultimately, it is the choice of plants that really set off the fairy garden. Any small or dwarf plant, hardy succulent, or small fern will help with the miniature Hostas.

Why not use varieties of miniature Hostas that have fun names? Here are a few ideas from our super miniature collection (named left to right)

Hosta Twinkle Toes, Hosta Pandora's Box, Hosta Tiny Bubbles, Hosta Tot Tot, Hosta Funny Mouse, Hosta Blue Mouse, Hosta Munchkin Fire and Hosta Firefly

Get the kids involved in building your fairy garden. Once they have been involved from the beginning, they will always want to be involved. This is good for future gardening youth. We are sadly lacking the youth of today from garden visiting. We need them to start younger and last longer. The fairy garden is a great way of getting the very young involved, early.
