New Hostas And Our Special Collection 2026

2026 Hosta Collection

This is an exciting time for us at Rewela Hostas. It’s when we sit down and discuss and decide which varieties we would like add to our collection for the new season.

We then take advice as to what is available from growers & breeders. Then wish list that we think our customers will love.

Marco Fransen

The handsome devil above is Marco Fransen from Fransen Hostas, with just a few of his Hostas

Fransen Hostas are the only specialist Hosta nursery in Holland. They grow only Hostas and nothing else. As a specialist Hosta grower and introducer of many new varieties, they offer knowledge and excellent, quality, disease free stock.

By working with Fransen we can bring you the widest choice of Hostas from Europe and the USA

So, how do we narrow down from so many choices. It’s difficult to know exactly what you the customers may want, as our tastes change from year to year.

We will replace a number of varieties that were popular last season, as well as adding a number of brand new exciting varieties.

Many of our dedicated Hosta collecting customers are waiting for this moment. They are looking to add new varieties to their thriving collections. They probably have hundreds of varieties already and are looking for something new. They are true Hostaholics

Red stemmed Hosta

This year hybridisers have surpassed themselves with a much wider selection of red stemmed Hostas. This is reflected in many of the varieties we have selected.

Red-stemmed Hostas are popular due to their striking visual appeal, which adds a unique, colourful accent to gardens, especially in shade gardens. They are also popular because they are available in a growing number of varieties in all sizes.

The red stems provide a strong, eye-catching contrast to the green, blue, or chartreuse leaves of the plant. You can have red stems almost any way you please. The most popular this year are red stems with vibrant yellow foliage. What a contrast, and there are more & more of them this year. What a contrast between the leaf stems (Petioles), and the foliage. Flowers stems (scapes).

You can get a number of stems that are rich red, pink or purple, even red speckled. We include these in the red stemmed varieties.

Red stems can also be found with green leaves. Again, another wonderful contrast.

The appearance of anthocyanins in the Hostas are what make the petioles red, as well as the flower scapes and even affects the flowers. The type of anthocyanin and the amount of it is what determines the strength of colour.

Hosta breeders have been working tirelessly on creating better Hostas with more red pigments throughout the whole plant. Thanks to these breeders we now have Hostas in all sizes and colours with the beautiful red legs.

Plant them in elevated spots like raised beds or containers to highlight the red stems, making them a focal point in the garden

Website Changes

We are often asked to advise on a number of characteristics such as stem colour or size. So, we have now created new search category for our growing selection of 'Red-stemmed Hostas'. Also we are asked, which are the largest & smallest Hostas with that in mind we have added two more categories called 'Super Giant' and 'Super Miniature ' to make searching for these a lot easier. Just hover over the shop button on the website home page.

Special Collection 2026

Don’t forget our Special Collection. These are varieties that we see, as a bit special.

Yes, they are more expensive in general, this is because of the cost of developing them being passed on from the breeders. There are fewer plants available therefore more costly. Over the years as more and more are grown, they become less costly and more readily available. We only have small numbers of these special varieties.
