Planning Ahead For a Great Hosta Spring Display

Welcome to 2026 and A Happy New Year from Rewela Hostas.

Now is a great time to plan ahead for a great Hosta display this year.

Whilst the weather conditions reduce the amount of time you may spend in your garden, why don’t you make use of your ‘indoor’ time and make some plans for the rest of the year.

No matter the size of your plot, it will always benefit from a bit of winter organisation.

Make a ‘to do’ list of all the things that you might want to do whilst the Hostas are still dormant.

Perhaps you might wish to consider any new hard landscaping or repair or changes of any existing hard landscaping. As with good garden design, this should always be done first. Having it written down means you might just remember everything. Noting a completion date could also be useful.

We will write a ‘Winter care’ blog next week, but many of those jobs could be listed on your planning list. When do you need to do these jobs by and do they need to be done in order? Planning these tasks is a great way of seeing what needs doing and you will be surprised how long the list could be.

Hosta planting ideas

Planning for any new Hosta areas is always a great idea. In the preparation of a new bed, the choice of Hostas definitely needs prior consideration. Listing the varieties, making sure they are available and buying them ready for planting.

New areas of interest such as a new cobbled or gravelled area set out with potted Hostas.

Plan for the materials and pots of different sizes.

You may want to plan an area for a special purpose such as a display of your miniature Hostas.

You may wish to consider recording the information. You have carefully planted your Hostas and labelled them so you can see what is where, why not record it?

Consider doing a quick drawing of each border? It doesn’t have to be very fancy, just a line drawing showing where each Hosta is and what it is called. That way if the label disappears, you still have a record of what you have and where it is. Have a look at the example below.

This is particularly important during the winter, when, for some strange reason, labels just magically disappear, probably birds pulling them out whilst they are looking for food. If you haven’t got a written record, there is very little way to identify the Hosta and re-label it. You could wait until spring/summer to try and identify the Hosta from the foliage. Not always as easy as it seems.

There is nothing worse, in my book, (other than, more than one), having a Hosta that you can’t identify.

Every year, and often topped up during the year, I make a list of Hostas that I would love to have in my collection. This is what I call my wish list. Most of which I will probably never see. When I was a youngster, I always had a Xmas present list. I never got everything or even most of them. Your ‘wish list’ will be exactly the same, however, it is a starting point.

Sometimes, a particular variety, that is on your wish list, suddenly appears on a suppliers sales list. This is your opportunity to decide whether or not to acquire it. Having a list to look at will help make your decision.

Gardening to do list

Lists are a great tool for planning the future, even long term. Why not put together a little plan for the rest of the season. What to do in each month and tick them off when you have done it.

Go on. Give it a go! Start with the short-term and work up to the rest. Planning makes life so much easier once put into action. However, there is little point in making plans if you never implement them.

We’ve all done it. The New Years resolution! Who ever keeps to what they have chosen. I would say less than more. Be responsible!
