Inspiration from R.E.M. Song Shiny Happy People
One of the many wonderful attributes of the Hosta is often overlooked or ignored. That is the leaf surface.........In particular, shiny leaved Hostas.
The shiny leaf surface adds another dimension to Hosta display by creating a contrast to the other Hostas. They also help reflect sunlight brining an extra pop your display.
Inspired by the song ‘Shiny Happy People’ by R.E.M. We felt it was about time to showcase some of our favourite varieties that have shiny foliage.
Hosta Invincible is a great example of a medium to large Hosta with shiny leaves, on both sides. They are a rich green colour making them shine in the sunlight. The Hosta will form a wide, leaf-packed specimen in the border or container very quickly. It is sun tolerant and has fragrant, lavender flowers as an extra benefit.
Hosta Blitz will form a medium sized clump a shiny, variegated leaves. The variegation starts creamy yellow and turns to white as the season progresses, but it never loses the shiny leaves. The flowers are almost white, to pale lavender and are fragrant to boot. This is a lovely medium Hosta that lasts well into the autumn.
Hosta Bedford Rise & Shine is a small very shiny Hosta that has dark green leaves with a narrow cream border. Red blushing leaf petioles add to the look of this Hosta. A lovely looking small shiny-leaved variegated Hosta that is slug resistant & has some tolerance to the sun. It forms a good strong clump very quickly. Mid-purple flowers add to the look of the Hosta.
Hosta Sugar & Spice is a medium sized Hosta with very glossy green leaves with an irregular rippled yellow edge that eventually turns white. Pale lavender flowers are scented, so another benefit to this one.
Hosta Appletini is a miniature Hosta with intense shiny yellow leaves that last all season. The pale purple flowers contrast very well with the yellow, shiny foliage. This one is also slug resistant. Hosta Appletini looks fantastic in a small container.
