Mulching Your Hostas

Why mulching matters

Mulching is a gardener’s secret weapon for protecting and nourishing Hostas through the season. Not only does it safeguard the roots from harsh winter temperatures, and extreme heat, but it also retains moisture, suppresses weeds, and enriches the soil. When done right, mulching can mean the difference between scraggly Hostas and a vibrant, healthy spring display.

Mulching your Hostas can be done all-year-round. It is as useful in the spring, summer & winter.

Choose the Right Mulch Material

Organic mulches, such as shredded bark, pine needles, or compost, work best for Hostas. These materials break down over time, enriching the soil with nutrients. Avoid heavy mulches like rubber or gravel, which can suffocate roots and trap excess moisture.

A good layer of mulch not only has the benefits spoken about earlier but actually looks fabulous, if done well. Who doesn’t want a clean, nice-looking, weed-free border to look at, that stays that way for ages.

Prepare the Area

Start by cleaning up around your Hostas. Remove fallen leaves, weeds, and any debris to reduce the risk of pests and diseases. If the soil feels compacted, gently loosen it with a garden fork to improve aeration.

Apply Mulch Correctly

Spread a 2 - 3 cm layer of mulch evenly around each Hosta, leaving a small gap around the base of the plant. This prevents moisture buildup directly against the stems, which can lead to rot. It can be slightly thicker away from the plant.

Replenish as Needed

Over time, organic mulch decomposes and may need to be replenished. Check your mulch layer in early spring and add more if necessary to maintain its effectiveness.

Root Protection: Mulch acts as an insulating blanket, shielding roots from freezing or extremely hot temperatures.

Moisture Retention: It keeps the soil moist even during dry winter periods, providing the soil was moist before application.

Nutrient Boost: Organic mulch enriches the soil as it decomposes, providing essential nutrients for spring growth.

Weed Suppression: A thick layer of mulch discourages weed growth, reducing competition for resources.

Can I use grass clippings as mulch?

Grass clippings can work in small amounts but should be mixed with other organic material.

Should I remove old mulch before adding a new layer?

It’s not always necessary to remove old mulch, but if it’s compacted or mouldy, clear it out before applying fresh mulch, to prevent matting and odour.

We tend to use a very fine shredded bark (known locally as play-bark). This is fine enough to put it on thinly, and usually last for two seasons before looking a little like it need a top up. We tend to leave the original mulch on the beds and just add more mulch where necessary.

Bag of Bark

To my mind and having used it for several years, is one of the easiest mulching solutions on the market. We buy it in 1-ton bags from a local builder’s merchant once or twice a year.

I will say however, the blackbirds just love digging about looking for food. They tend to flick the bark, sometimes as far as 60cm from the bed.

Even though I have to clean up after the birds, it saves so much time on weeding and watering and looks fabulous when tidy).

If you don’t yet use mulch, give it a go. It’s an initial outlay, but well worth it.

Use a mulch of your choice. Protect your Hostas, and make you garden better place, and less work to.
