Our Favourite Variegated Hostas This Season

Hostas are predominantly cultivated for their attractive foliage, which exhibits a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colours. They are straightforward to grow and highly adaptable garden plants.

Hostas are long-lived, shade-loving plants that consistently return every spring. Their enduring qualities make them highly favourable.

There are hundreds of varieties to choose from and with new cultivars being introduced each year, that choice is even greater.

To refine our focus, let’s take a look at variegated Hostas.

Hostas come in a variety of colours. From green foliage to yellow, or even blue foliage, the choice is yours. Rather than being one solid colour, these variegated varieties exhibit two or more colours on their leaves. These combinations can include green and white, green and cream, white and blue, or even yellow variegation.

They are all available in a range of sizes, from miniature and small to medium, large, and even giant varieties. The versatile variegated Hosta encompasses all size categories within the Hosta genus.

We have had a really dry late Winter and early Spring, with very little rain. We have had to water using normal tap water, and some of our variegated Hostas have done really well. Here are a few of them.

Hosta Ann Kulpa
Hosta Ann Kulpa

The first of our recommendations is the visually stunning Hosta Ann Kulpa, with its rich dark green leaves with a cream to white centre, with streaks of pale green. This remarkable Hosta not only presents an attractive appearance but also maintains its tri-colour foliage throughout the growing season. Additionally, the leaves exhibit a pleasant shine that contributes to its relative resistance to slugs. The Hosta Ann Kulpa is an excellent addition to any collection and performs exceptionally well in both container gardening and border planting.

Hosta Golden Meadows
Hosta Golden Meadows

Hosta Golden Meadows is a distinguished variety with its dark green margins and cream centre, which turns to white through the season. It also features pale green streaks between the two colours. The leaves have a subtly twisted appearance, adding to its unique look. We love this one..... You should too!

Hosta Great Escape
Hosta Great Escape

Hosta Great Escape is a medium-sized variety with its distinctive green and white foliage. The leaves display striking contrast with dark green centres and clean white edges. This variety, once well-established, becomes a prominent feature in any garden setting. It exhibits a low-growing, mound-forming habit, unlike many other Hosta varieties.

Hosta Undulata Univittata
Hosta Undulata Univittata

Hosta undulata Univittata, known for its striking appearance, features a predominantly white and green variegation. The white colour forms most of the variegation, highlighted by shards of pale green. This Hosta variety is notable for its soft, flowing foliage and its ability to multiply well over several years.

Hosta Pathfinder
Hosta Pathfinder

Hosta Pathfinder is a reliable cultivar, with its striking dark green borders and white centre. This Hosta variety has an open growth habit that shows off its vibrant colours. Although it has a slower initial growth rate compared to others, its mature form is well worth the wait. Hosta Pathfinder is an excellent choice for enhancing any garden with its robust and striking appearance.

Hosta Chain Lighting

If you are seeking a more subdued colour combination, Hosta Chain Lightning may be the ideal variegated Hosta for you. It features mid-green leaves with a cream centre, providing a more subtle contrast compared to other variegated Hostas. It has moderate growth at a medium pace and is a robust, resilient plant.

Hosta White Satellite

Introducing the variegated Hosta White Satellite, featuring striking white edges and a broad green centre. This variety boasts robust and strong leaves, making it resistant to slugs. It is an excellent choice for any setting and performs exceptionally well in containers. This is a new introduction for this year from Marco Fransen.

Hosta Twilight

Another notable variety that deserves mention is Hosta Twilight. This plant features long, rounded leaves with yellow margins and green centres, exuding an air of elegance.

There are many, many more variegated varieties that we could talk about, in fact, hundreds. However, we have just picked a few that are looking rather splendid this season.

Variegated Hostas are not everybody’s cup of tea, but it would be fair to say that the colourful variegated Hostas hold most peoples attention, the longest.

Why not look at mixing variegated Hostas, with plain coloured ones. Make a contrast! Do something outrageous!

I personally do just that. I love the bright colours of the variegated Hostas, but I intensify the colours with a contrast of plain green, blue or yellow. Try it. It’s fun!
